Coca-Cola Chicken Wings (4 ingredients)

Have you ever cooked with Coca-Cola? While Coca-Cola is a popular soda/pop drink, we might not think that Coca-Cola could be used in cooking. Since there is a lot of sugar in Coca-Cola and the carbonic acid in the Coca-Cola (by product of adding carbon dioxide into the drink), it is a great ingredient to flavour and tenderize protein you cook it with. So I’m going to make some Coca-Cola chicken wings.
The reason why chicken wings are so popular to cook with coca-cola is because chicken is mild in flavour and easy to cook through. This allow the flavours of the chicken to blend well with the coca-cola, giving it a sweet and savoury flavour. My husband is not a fan of soda or pop drinks because he doesn’t like the fizz or sugar in the drinks, while I like the fizz but not the amount of sugar. However, I would keep coca-cola on hand just to make these chicken wings.
Ingredients for Coca-cola chicken wings
For this dish, I only used chicken wing flats and no other veggies. I want to keep this as simple as possible. I like to cook other veggies on the side. This way it keeps the dish relatively simple.
The other ingredients are all seasoning. I only used soy sauce, dark soy sauce and of course coca-cola. I didn’t use any salt, or sugar as soy sauce and coca-cola provided plenty of flavouring. However, if you feel that the seasoning is too light, you can also add a bit of salt or sugar. Make sure to add it at the end when finishing the dish.
How to make it
First you score the chicken wing flats, put into a pot of water with some scallion, ginger and cooking wine and boil for about 5 minutes. This helps to get rid of any unpleasant taste of the chicken.

Rinse the chicken wings. Put some oil into a pan, and fry the chicken wing until both sides are slightly golden.

Add in the soy sauce, dark soy sauce and scallion cut into 3 inch pieces. Simmer for about 5 minutes then add in half of the coca-cola amount and let it simmer for about 2-3 minutes and then add in the other half of the coca-cola amount. Let it simmer for another 30 minutes, until the chicken wing is tender.

Sprinkle some roasted white sesame seeds and serve with rice.

Pro-tip
- If you don’t like Coca-cola, you can use Pepsi as well.
- I recommend boiling the chicken wing to get rid of any unpleasant taste but if you don’t want to do that, you can dry the chicken and just straight pan fry it.
- Pan fry on medium low as the chicken will splatter and also use low heat to stew the chicken wing with the coca-cola to prevent burning.
- Check on the chicken occasionally to make sure the bottom is not burnt.
