Sesame Mochi balls- brown sugar filling
If there is one thing I loved ordering at Dim Sum is these sesame mochi balls. These sesame mochi balls have a slight crispy outside with a chewy middle and with an airy inside. It’s usually filled with a red bean paste, black sesame or custard. It has the perfect amount of sweetness and I love the crispy and chewy texture!
I never cooked dim sum at home because itโs so accessible where I live so I have not considered making any at home. However, recently I started to become more curious about making dim sum at home. I want to challenge myself making dishes I only buy outside at home. What better way to start than making one of my favourite dim sum dish; sesame mochi balls?

This recipe is a lot easier than I thought. Typically this sesame mochi balls will be deep fried but I’m not a huge fan of deep frying at home. However, you can make these sesame mochi balls at home with an air fryer. This made the cleanup so much better! In addition, the ingredients are simple so it’s so easy to make at home! I’m definitely going to make more dim sum at home since it can be expensive eating it at a restaurant. Stay tuned!
Ingredients:
This recipe only requires 4 ingredients to make the sesame mochi balls. Depending on what your filling will be, you can purchase some pre-made filling like red bean paste. For this recipe, Iโm making a brown sugar filling with 3 ingredients only.
Makes 12 sesame mochi balls (about 2.5in/6.35cm in diameter)
Sesame mochi balls
- 2/3 cup warm water
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 2 cups glutinous rice flour
- Roasted white sesame seeds to roll the balls
Brown sugar filling
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp roasted white sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp all purpose flour

Substitution:
You can choose any fillings you like. Some ideas include: red bean paste (homemade or store bought), white lotus paste (these can be store bought in Asian supermarket), black sesame or even chocolate.

How to make Sesame Mochi Balls
- Dissolve the sugar into warm water. Add in the glutinous rice flour (no need to sift). Mix with a fork and then you knead with your hands
- Make your filling by combining brown sugar, roasted white sesame seeds and all purpose flour
- Take a small amount of dough (around 60g) and flatten them into a round disc.
- Then add a small amount of the filling and close it off. Roll it into a ball
- Spray some water and roll into the white sesame seeds
- Place the sesame mochi balls into the air fryer
- Repeat until all of the sesame mochi balls are done.
- Brush on some oil and air fry at 195oC or 383oF for 15 minutes. Make sure to flip them and oil half way.
- Let it cool and enjoy!

Pro-tip
- When you flatten the rice flour dough, don’t make the middle too thin or else the filling will come out.
- Hold the dough in the palm of your hand and use your hand to form a cup so you can catch the brown sugar filling.
- Use your index and thumb to push the dough towards each other so you don’t break the dough (Glutinous rice flour doesn’t have gluten so it doesn’t have the elasticity of a regular flour dough).
- If you had leftovers, you can just reheat in the air fryer at 160oC or 320oF for 5 minutes or in the oven at 350oF or 176oC for 5 minutes.
