Black Sesame Latte

cold and hot black sesame latte

With the winter fully upon us, I love making hot drinks at home. I’ve been experimenting with different ingredients to make alternative lattes. Don’t get me wrong, I love my coffee but sometimes it’s just nice to have something different. This black sesame latte is very simple to make and I think it’s a great drink for kids and people who doesn’t drink anything caffeinated. It also uses my homemade sesame paste.

Sesame seeds are high in calcium and contains a lot of other micronutrients our body needs so it’s a great way to utilize sesame into your everyday consumption. I love steamed milk or nut milk drinks so this sesame latte is just what I need.

Sesame latte?

What is exactly a sesame latte? Well it’s actually just sesame and steamed milk. Latte is steamed milk in Italian. Thus, if you make anything with steamed milk then it’s a latte plus anything you add like sesame paste, matcha, coffee etc.

Ingredients and how to make it

I used 3 ingredients for this latte: milk (you could also use other non dairy milk), black sesame paste, a bit of maple syrup or honey. That’s it!

I would heat up the sesame paste with a bit of milk and sweetener so that it would be less viscous and easier to mix with steamed milk.

Then heat up more milk to be about 60oC and use a handheld frother to froth the milk. Alternatively you can try steaming the milk using a espresso machine or a French press.

If making cold sesame latte, follow the same steps for mixing the sesame paste. Add cold milk and ice. Then you can make sesame cold foam by mixing whipping/heavy cream with sesame paste. Then pour it on top.

Pro-tip

  • Use a small amount of sesame paste, or else it would not mix well together.
  • If you want to mix it better, use the frother first to mix the sesame paste with milk and heat it up.
