There is a famous bakery in London UK called Hachi and they make these really popular honey butter toast. I saw so many variations of the honey butter toast until I saw someone on Chinese social media decided to put a twist on french toast with honey. This honey french toast does not need brown sugar or butter but still have the crunchy texture as the honey butter toast.
Why honey french toast?
Originally I wanted to make the honey butter toast but the amount of butter and sugar is too decadent for me. In addition, I wanted to try it for breakfast so when I saw someone using honey on french toast, I wanted to make it. I made it a few times and I’ve added a couple of tweaks. After the tweak it was delicious.
Ingredients
There are only 4 ingredients with this recipe: milk, eggs, milk bread, honey. You would do the same steps as you would for a french toast but you need thick slices of milk bread so that you can get the crunch exterior with soft interior. At the end, you need to put the honey onto the toast and grill it so it has the crunchy exterior.
How to make it
First, crack eggs and mix with milk. Dip the milk bread slices into the mixture until it’s all absorbed. Then pop the bread into the oven at 400oF for 5 minutes.
Then you flip the toast and go into the oven for another 5 minutes. After drizzle some honey or if your honey is crystallized, you can spread it onto the toast. Remember to do both sides, put it back into the oven, put the oven to 450oF for another 7-8 minutes until it’s crispy before taking it out.
Plate it and enjoy with some fruits.
Pro-tip
- Use thick slices of bread like 1-1.5 inch.
- Also use a slightly softer bread so you can get a soft inside with a crunchy exterior.
- If you are using an artisan bread, increase the milk and eggs and make sure to soak the bread thoroughly.
- When baking with the honey, the honey will form a crust but it’s not as hard as a sugar crust. You can shorten the baking time, it will still have the honey flavour.
- use only a small amount of the milk, you don’t want the mixture to be very liquidy or else it won’t cook to the right texture.
