Braised rice-Rice cooker and oven method

This one pot braised rice is so simple to make and only requires either a rice cooker or an oven to make it. It doesn't even require you to stand at the stove!

Equipment

  • rice cooker OR
  • oven

Ingredients

Rice

  • 2 cups medium grain rice
  • cup water/ stock no salt (2 cups boiling water/stock for oven)

Toppings

  • 2-3 hot dogs cut into small chunks (spam works but decrease the salt in sauce)
  • 1 cup frozen veggies (green beans, carrots, corns, peas)
  • ½ cup mushroom

Sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp dark soy sauce
  • 2 tsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground white pepper (ground black pepper works well too )

Instructions

Prepping the ingredients

  • Wash the rice
  • Cut the mushrooms and hot dog or any protein of your choice*
  • Prep the sauce in a bowl. *

Rice cooker method

  • In the rice cooker pot, add in washed rice, stock/water, veggies and protein and the sauce.
  • Close the lid, no need to stir, set to white rice and click start.

Oven method

  • Preheat the oven to 375℉ or 190℃
  • Boil the water/stock
  • In an oven safe dish like dutch oven or casserole dish, add in rice, boiling stock/water and sauce. Mix together.
  • Add in the veggies and hot dog.
  • Cover with aluminum foil or a lid
  • Bake for 25 minutes**

Notes

*If you are using raw meat like beef or pork, use the sauce to marinate the protein and then put into the rice cooker. Choose a protein that will cook easily or else it might not cook fully.
**the time it takes the rice to cook will depend on the type of rice. Long grain rice like jasmine rice takes shorter time than medium grain. Brown rice will take twice as long.
